People
have been living in this valley for 10,000-12,000 years.
You will hear stories of these ancient ones about the
coming of the pioneers and cavalry, today's Indian
cultures, the plants and animals, as we see prehistoric
pueblo ruins, a cliff dwelling and Montezuma's Well,
one of the most sacred sites in the valley and Yavapai-Apache
lands of today.
The geology tells the story of young volcanic mountains
ringing two sides of the valley, reveals jagged orange rock
forged from fire 1.8 billion years ago in scenic Deception
Gulch, and includes views across the valley of the red sandstone
cliffs that demarcate the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau.
We'll bring
alive the colorful copper mining era in mountainside
Jerome with its charming turn-of-the-century buildings
and artist studios--once the third largest city in
Arizona, today a ghost town with fascinating remains
of tunnels and open pit, railroads, and the jail that
slid 225' down the hill.
And we get as excited
as you gazing at the magnificent panoramic views of over
30 miles of red rocks from the highest mountain in the
valley--we like to time it so you see this in the incredible
sunset glow!
We now have 5 vineyards (4
of which offer tasting) located along Oak Creek and the
Verde River and could a stop a one or more of them on our
explorations.
